What are some things to look for when it comes to a trapping snowmobile?
I'm thinking reliability and gas mileage would be at the top of the list.
In searching CL, they range from 400$ to 10,000$, some old, some new, some to good to be true.
Which machines have worked good for you on your line?

I agree with the fan cooled, lighter than liquid cooled and long track is a must for deep snow, As we all have a preferece for the brand of truck we drive, on the snowmobile I like the Yamahas, From what I have been told the best trapping snowmachine is the Skidoo Tundra, very high price even for a used one if you can even find a used one.

Mark, 98 Tundra ll about 1/2 way to your daughters place, mint, 500 miles on it and he wants $2600 and that is delivered to me here. His dad lives in Spokane and he visits him quite often so would bring it to me. Also has a newer one, 2004 for 4000. 900 miles I believe on that.

I've ran the shit out of long track Yamaha's back in the 80's and 90's. Damn good machines!!
However I haven't been on anything newer than a 1989 which I still have.
I've spent quite a bit of time on a Tundra in Alaska and that is the machine that I'd buy if I was looking at a new one.
Those Alaska guys all swore by them and I sure liked my experience on them.

What about tracks for an ATV. I snowmobile, but Tracks on ATV would probably work better. Tatou tracks. I use the wife's 2007 Yamaha Phazer occasionally. It's liquid cooled and doesn't overheat and has reverse. I have a Yamaha Apex Mtn., lots of fun but not for trapping. Both are 4 stroke and heavy. I prefer 4 stroke, tired of burned up engines.

Never thought of tracks for an ATV, good idea. What would be the limitations on that, if any?

Take a look at the four stroke tundras.
The 600 ace is supposed to be fantastic on gas.
I dont believe the published mileages at 26 mpg, but its could be over 20 mpg.
Finding a used one could be tough.
What grump said on the ATV tracks is spot on.

Last wek a friend brought up tracks unstead of a snowmachine. We were just bs'g around and a couple days ago I called a dealer in Spokane who had an advertisement for like $2600+ for tracks. Well I know some have blown there motors because of low cc's and I / this fella and he said that Kimplex tracks could and would but the camoplax [sp] have different sprockets. Like for my 2008 450 grizz he would use a 16 tooth one were a larger cc would use a 17-18 tooth and he also said the best one he ever seen was a 300 Honda with 15 tooth. Said it was light it stayed on top of the snow. Now for my grizz it would be $3350.00 + $100 to install OTD. To remove and/or put back on after that would be $65 and it takes about 2 hrs. Now that's not that you can't do it yourself.

I thought about sell snowmobiles and buying tracks but my $12000 snowmobile is only worth about $5000 now, so I'm not selling the snowmobile. I'll be getting tracks eventually. The tracked ATV would be too slow for a 10 mile or more ride but would be fine for shorter loops. Basically, if you use an ATV now, the tracks would be a better option in my opinion. I have friends with tracks who have sold their snowmobiles. Buy good tracks if you do it. Again Tatou, probably what Decoy was talking about.
