I use a 4 wheel drive here and most of the time like this year only used the 4 wheels twice but nice to have it, if I only had a 2 wheel drive I wouldn't get off the main roads and snow and rain / mud would be a problem .

I dont know where you are Grumpy but when i was in Michigan or New Jersey I liked 4 wheel drive came in real handy, here its plains hard pack with grass on it, and I been thinking it might be nice, to have a Ranger but keep the 4wd for real bad times...A guy told me he can get over 30 on the highway,I get 18 if everything is good...and i need to cover some ground....

I am in mont. where this dirt gets damp it turns to axel grease, I use a Toyoya extended cab with topper, 1987 model with 22R and get 24 on the hiway, and I know puttering along the section lines here I don't burn much fuel. Ranger should be good on mileage too.

Ok Grumpy thanks, I bet its similar ground a hard pack clay like when wet, we normally don't get much rain here but when it does even 4 wd is tricky its worse then ice. We have the grass though so if I ain't on pavement , section line or dirt road its better to just drive the sides of the road where there's grass there flat anyways.
A lot of people like the Toyota's I have given that some thought...but was hoping for that 30 mpg mark if its fact and not fiction.
with the f150 both tanks are empty in 2-3 days....

Our ground here has alot of bentonite, which is like a Hershy Bar when wet clump sticks to everything like half dried grease, pressure washer has a tough time getting it off, it is used to put in the stock ponds here to keep the water from seeping out so fast. Only takes a 5 min. rain shower to make it like grease, tough steering and tougher driving on it. Most times a 4 wheel drive is not needed but if caught in a little drizzle rain it is almost a must to get to a gravel or blacktop road.

is that Bentonite a white powder like? there's a lot of alkali here, iron in the water ,your grease dirt sounds like here and just as fast all it has to do is get surface wet, often after it rains it looks like snow in the fields a white salt like... course your farther west I am not sure what Bentonite is ,Lots of coal underground here and oil isn't unheard of...

I looked it up in Wiki ...not sure if its here but i do know that there's something that makes the ground real hard and when it rains it gets worse...a pick is a useful tool, and if i water the garden (well water) or it would rain alot I have to till it as it compacts and gets hard

Bentonite is just a form of dirt, actually if you were to bite it when wet (gumbo) is has no grit in it, just like a Hershy bar would feel on your teeth. we have the alkaline here, called saline seep and it is some nasty chit to be stuck in too, dry as a popcorn fart for the first inch of white crystals then almost like quicksand but mud underneath, they never dry out always leaching the ground water up to the surface where the top inch or so dries out and leaves the alkaline/salt residue, almost always need to be towed out of it as the more the tires turns the deeper you go until on the frame.

Interesting Grumpy Don't think we have it where i am, mine has some grit, but lots of some kinda clay content, sounds like maybe the badlands soil might be more similar....
